LEGACY

Raised in London, Larry Lazarus left early — travelling through Turkey, Israel, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, and Iran before finding his way to Hamburg. F.C. Gundlach brought him there and set up a dedicated black-and-white laboratory for him. From that darkroom, Larry became one of the defining figures of analogue printing in Hamburg. His rooms were never just workplaces — they were vibrant meeting points for photographers, artists, collectors, and characters from every world.

While the world became louder and more performative, Larry stayed analogue. He was one of the finest master printers of his generation — precise, real, deeply devoted to his craft, and never once tempted to leave it behind. Dry humour, a big heart, and a complete absence of ego — never artificial, never digital, never pretending. He spent his life bringing other people’s work to light and never held an exhibition of his own photography. Larry died in February 2026. Driven by deep conviction and love for his uncompromised vision, his daughter Joya spent years building and running the gallery as a space of encounter, opening his first solo exhibition on 23 May 2026. As the Gallery Lazarus at Wexstraße closes on 31 July, THE LAZARUS takes the archive into the world.
